Gifted Thinking: Where’s the Rest of the Moose?

True story: A three year-old boy was in a rustic restaurant with his parents. He became very agitated and said he could not and would not eat the food. When his father asked him why, the young boy pointed up to the wall where a large moose was mounted on the other side of the room.

The father asked his son why it bothered him so. The child then pointed to the kitchen doors on the other side of the moose and stated, “That’s where all the food is coming out and that means the rest of the moose is over the stove in the kitchen….and that means the moose’s bottom is over my food and I’m not eating it!”

The father had a difficult time explaining the truth to the child, who at the age of three was not really ready to hear the moose’s head had been removed and was mounted on the wall. He got away with explaining to his son that it was merely a decoration and there was no “rest of the moose”.

Conversations with gifted toddlers may not always be easy but they are often interesting.
